RACE REPORTS
Round 1: Canterbury 10 miler – 25.01.2026
Round 1 of this year’s Grand Prix was the Canterbury 10 miler with a brand new route on hand to greet the PWRs eager to get some early points on the scoreboard. There were 114 proudly entered as PWRs with 97 of those gunning for GP points out of the 1524 finishers - a sizable proportion for a race not on our doorstep.
The new route started and finished at the University of Kent perched at the top of Tyler Hill overlooking the city and its cathedral. The event was well organised and the new route was generally well received and not congested. Despite it feeling like a number of hills, a number of competitors set PBs for the distance including Melody Kane who broke her own club record.
This year’s record GP entry has been divided into 20 different groups with the committee making a few changes after this opening round in a thankless attempt to ensure there are no runaway winners.

Twelve runners have been put in the fastest group and with 9 in attendance they had the best turnout. Adam Wilkinson set the pace, although he wasn’t the fastest PWR at Canterbury as Will Senbanjo who isn’t registered for the GP was 11th overall, five places ahead of Wilkinson.
Greg Dunning joined Wilkinson in dipping under an hour for the 10 miles, with Oliver York next up from Kev Howarth. Simon Thornhill and Mark Philbrick completed the top six.

Last year’s Group 4 champion Johnny Gill took the honours in this year’s Group 3 from Cameron Swatton making his debut in the series. Tim Williams, Kobus Kellermann and Matthew Pond made up the remainder of the Group 4s at the event.

With Gill promoted to the group above, the way was clear for John Kingscott who had been runner-up to Gill last year, to take the Group 4 victory. It was close though at the top in this group with 2nd-placed Steve Wilde just 18 seconds behind, and Jamie White, Elly Phillips and Marcus Elwes covered by the next 40 seconds!

Round 2: PADDOCK WOOD HALF – 08.03.2026
Round 2 of the 2026 PWR Grand Prix was the Paddock Wood Half on March 8th. 85 signed on from the club of which 67 were entered in the GP. Will Senbanjo set a new MV40 club record for the distance of 1:13:48 but isn’t registered for the GP this year.
Although as mentioned there was a great turnout from PWRs which probably made us the largest club, despite it not even being held on our local patch, there were a number of no-shows - presumably either through injury or a change of heart that they needed to run even longer distances, like the Kingston 20 the same day, as part of their Spring marathon training.
The weather was perfect for running and, with plenty of closed roads and great marshaling, it was a really good event. Some of the UK Athletics officials got some grief on social media for clamping down on the strict no in-ear headphones but rules are there to be enforced.

Burnett was using the Garmin pacing function for the first time as recommended by his good friend, Group 11’s Nigel Hewson, who was also using it for the first time and to good effect. Group 9 was no exception with Andrew Vadron leading home Steve Burnett in a repeat of the opening round’s result. Burnett was using the Garmin pacing function for the first time as recommended by his good friend, Group 11’s Nigel Hewson, who was also using it for the first time and to good effect. Agne Zavistanavice set a PB to take 3rd, with Paul Strachan 4th.

Round 3: MEMBERS 10k – 19.04.2026
The Members 10k on April 19th was Round 3 of the Grand Prix and, as always, was a wonderful event! Excellently organised, beautiful weather and a selection of cakes afterwards - what more could a runner want!
This local round came after two races over longer race distances and further away so attracted a good number of championship entrants despite it taking place just week before the London Marathon. There were also plenty of non-GP runners, including some tackling their first ever 10k.
An event of this quality needs a big team to make it run smoothly and 15 volunteering points were on offer to any GP competitors who preferred to help out rather than run.
Entrants were set off in waves in their Grand Prix groups so you could see your rivals and engage in mind games and tactical battles!
Group 1 (12 registered competitors)
1 Connor Gates, 2 Silky Ng, 3 Simon Thornhill, 4 Mark Philbrick.
Championship leader Kev Howarth was behind his camera for this round, and it was Connor Gates taking the win just like he did last year. Silky Ng was the runner-up for the second race in a row, with Simon Thornhill 3rd and Mark Philbrick 4th.

Mark Burgess’ tactics of just doing enough worked to perfection. Mike Roberts set the early pace before Seaton Giles sailed past taking Burgess with him. Burgess was forced into taking the lead earlier than he had intended when they went past runners from another group, but was able to hold on to take the win. Giles was 2nd from Scott Haragan, Adam Waterman and Roberts.

This local round came after two races over longer race distances and further away so attracted a good number of championship entrants despite it taking place just week before the London Marathon. There were also plenty of non-GP runners, including some tackling their first ever 10k.
An event of this quality needs a big team to make it run smoothly and 15 volunteering points were on offer to any GP competitors who preferred to help out rather than run.
Entrants were set off in waves in their Grand Prix groups so you could see your rivals and engage in mind games and tactical battles!

Championship leader Kev Howarth was behind his camera for this round, and it was Connor Gates taking the win just like he did last year. Silky Ng was the runner-up for the second race in a row, with Simon Thornhill 3rd and Mark Philbrick 4th.

Mark Burgess’ tactics of just doing enough worked to perfection. Mike Roberts set the early pace before Seaton Giles sailed past taking Burgess with him. Burgess was forced into taking the lead earlier than he had intended when they went past runners from another group, but was able to hold on to take the win. Giles was 2nd from Scott Haragan, Adam Waterman and Roberts.

Round 4: DARENT VALLEY 10k – 10.05.2026
The Darent Valley 10k on May 10th was round 4 of this year’s GP series. After a bumper turnout at the previous round, numbers were down for this usually popular race - no doubt due to it being a late replacement for the Hildenborough 5 miler which never got off the ground.
Three PWRs decided it would be good to combine this round with training runs for the Three Castles 50km ultra later in the month, so Louis Strover and Sally Callaghan ran back from Eynsford, while Kevin Ly took it one step further by running there and back - a total of 43km!
Although Darent Valley is always an enjoyable but hard race, there were timing issues once again which meant numerous emails to the organisers to sort them all out.

Three PWRs decided it would be good to combine this round with training runs for the Three Castles 50km ultra later in the month, so Louis Strover and Sally Callaghan ran back from Eynsford, while Kevin Ly took it one step further by running there and back - a total of 43km!
Although Darent Valley is always an enjoyable but hard race, there were timing issues once again which meant numerous emails to the organisers to sort them all out.
