RACE REPORTS

Round 1: Canterbury 10 miler – 25.01.2026

Round 1 of this year’s Grand Prix was the Canterbury 10 miler with a brand new route on hand to greet the PWRs eager to get some early points on the scoreboard. There were 114 proudly entered as PWRs with 97 of those gunning for GP points out of the 1524 finishers - a sizable proportion for a race not on our doorstep.

The new route started and finished at the University of Kent perched at the top of Tyler Hill overlooking the city and its cathedral. The event was well organised and the new route was generally well received and not congested. Despite it feeling like a number of hills, a number of competitors set PBs for the distance including Melody Kane who broke her own club record.

This year’s record GP entry has been divided into 20 different groups with the committee making a few changes after this opening round in a thankless attempt to ensure there are no runaway winners.

Group 1 (12 registered competitors)
1 Adam Wilkinson 57:08, 2 Greg Dunning 58:42, 3 Oliver York 01:01:58, 4 Kev Howarth 01:02:13, 5 Simon Thornhill 01:02:15, 6 Mark Philbrick 01:02:21, 7 Steve Camacho 01:03:04, 8 Silky Ng 01:03:25, 9 Mark Griffin 01:04:21.

Twelve runners have been put in the fastest group and with 9 in attendance they had the best turnout.  Adam Wilkinson set the pace, although he wasn’t the fastest PWR at Canterbury as Will Senbanjo who isn’t registered for the GP was 11th overall, five places ahead of Wilkinson.

Greg Dunning joined Wilkinson in dipping under an hour for the 10 miles, with Oliver York next up from Kev Howarth. Simon Thornhill and  Mark Philbrick completed the top six.

Championship: 1 Adam Wilkinson (20 points), 2 Greg Dunning (18), 3 Oliver York (16), 4 Kev Howarth (15), 5 Simon Thornhill (14), 6 Mark Philbrick (13), 7 Steve Camacho (12), 8 Silky Ng (11), 9 Mark Griffin (10), 10= Connor Gates, James Bevis & Toby Chapman (0).

Group 2 (9 registered competitors)
1 Melody Kane 01:03:57, 2 James Brinkley 01:05:42, 3 James Wall 01:05:54, 4 Stephen Pond 01:06:49, 5 Haki Bardhi 01:09:01.

Group 2 runner-up last season, Melody Kane took the honours in the same group from James Brinkley, and 2025 champion James Wall 3rd. Stephen Pond was 4th from Haki Bardhi who finished 3rd in last year’s competition.

Championship: 1 Melody Kane (20 points), 2 James Brinkley (18), 3 James Wall (16), 4 Stephen Pond (15), 5 Haki Bardhi (14), 6= Christophe Cardon, Jason Mercer, Kevin Chadwick & Oliver Hitch (0).

Last year’s Group 4 champion Johnny Gill took the honours in this year’s Group 3 from Cameron Swatton making his debut in the series. Tim Williams, Kobus Kellermann and Matthew Pond made up the remainder of the Group 4s at the event.

Championship: 1 Johnny Gill (20 points), 2 Cameron Swatton (18), 3 Tim Williams (16), 4 Kobus Kellermann (15), 5 Matthew Pond (14), 6= Adam Shahin, Emma Stevens & Steve Bowley (0).

With Gill promoted to the group above, the way was clear for John Kingscott who had been runner-up to Gill last year, to take the Group 4 victory. It was close though at the top in this group with 2nd-placed Steve Wilde just 18 seconds behind, and Jamie White, Elly Phillips and Marcus Elwes covered by the next 40 seconds!

Round 2: PADDOCK WOOD HALF – 08.03.2026

Round 2 of the 2026 PWR Grand Prix was the Paddock Wood Half on March 8th. 85 signed on from the club of which 67 were entered in the GP. Will Senbanjo set a new MV40 club record for the distance of 1:13:48 but isn’t registered for the GP this year.

Although as mentioned there was a great turnout from PWRs which probably made us the largest club, despite it not even being held on our local patch, there were a number of no-shows - presumably either through injury or a change of heart that they needed to run even longer distances, like the Kingston 20 the same day, as part of their Spring marathon training.

The weather was perfect for running and, with plenty of closed roads and great marshaling, it was a really good event. Some of the UK Athletics officials got some grief on social media for clamping down on the strict no in-ear headphones but rules are there to be enforced.

Group 1 (12 registered competitors)
1 Kev Howarth 01:18:48, 2 Silky Ng 01:19:09, 3 Mark Philbrick 01:20:27, 4 Oliver York 01:20:57, 5 Simon Thornhill 01:21:34, 6 Mark Griffin 01:22:10.

A win for Kev Howarth who is surprised just how well he is running at the moment. He topped the age graded scores for PWRs at the event with an 85.34 score, so yes Kev you are running well! Silky Ng who had finished 8th at Canterbury in Group 1 was an excellent 2nd, with Mark Philbrick also putting in a good performance to round out the top three. All six PWRs were separated by less than 4 minutes at the finish.

Championship: 1 Kev Howarth (35 points), 2 Oliver York (31), 3= Mark Philbrick & Silky Ng (29), 5 Simon Thornhill (28), 6 Mark Griffin (23), 7 Adam Wilkinson (20), 8 Greg Dunning (18), 9 Steve Camacho (12), 10= Connor Gates, James Bevis & Toby Chapman (0).

Group 2 (9 registered competitors)
1 Christophe Cardon 01:22:50, 2 Haki Bardhi 01:24:46, 3 Jason Mercer 01:25:40, 4 James Brinkley 01:27:06, 5 Oliver Hitch 01:28:17, 6 Melody Kane 01:28:32, 7 James Wall 01:30:22.

A PB for Christophe Cardon saw him enter the series with a bang to take the win. Haki Bardhi was 2nd, while Jason Mercer in 3rd was another to set a personal best. Canterbury winner Melody Kane could only manage 6th at this round.

Championship: 1= Melody Kane & James Brinkley (33 points), 3 Haki Bardhi (32), 4 James Wall (28), 5 Christophe Cardon (20), 6 Jason Mercer (16), 7 Stephen Pond (15), 8 Oliver Hitch (14), 9 Kevin Chadwick (0).

Group 3 (8 registered competitors)
1 Tim Williams 01:27:35, 2 Adam Shahin 01:33:46, 3 Kobus Kellermann 01:34:20, 4 Emma Stevens 01:38:09.

Tim Williams finished well clear of Adam Shahin and Jacobus Kellerman to take the Group 3 win, with Emma Stevens 4th.

Championship: 1 Tim Williams (36 points), 2 Kobus Kellermann (31), 3 Johnny Gill (20), 4= Cameron Swatton & Adam Shahin (18), 6 Emma Stevens (15), 7 5 Matthew Pond (14), 8 Steve Bowley (0).

Group 4 (10 registered competitors)
1 John Kingscott 01:28:28, 2 Steve Wilde 01:34:02, 3 Elly Phillips 01:34:20, 4 Jamie White 01:35:11, 5 Oliver Evans 01:36:05, 6 Marcus Elwes 01:36:54, 7 Mark Franks 01:37:37.

There was a PB for the Group 4 winner John Kingscott as he dipped under 90 minutes for the first time. Steve Wilde was 2nd again and less than 20 seconds ahead of 3rd-placed Elly Phillips. This looks a good group to watch with Jamie White & Phillips each taking a 3rd and a 4th place at the two rounds so far, while Marcus Elwes and Oliver Evans have each secured a 5th and a 6th.

Championship: 1 John Kingscott (40 points), 2 Steve Wilde (36), 3= Jamie White & Elly Phillips (31), 5= Marcus Elwes & Oliver Evans (27), 7 Mark Franks (24), 8= Charles Crabtree, Nick White & Tom Medhurst (0).

Group 5 (12 registered competitors)
1 Paul Edmonton 01:36:17, 2 Kerrie Donohue 01:37:55, 3 Simon Keyes 01:38:09, 4 Chloe Haffenden 01:38:46, 5 Laura Elvin 01:45:56.

Paul Edmonton secured his second victory in a row but can’t ease off on the gas as Kerrie Donohue has been close by on both occasions. Simon Keyes and 2025 Group 5 champion Chloe Haffenden were not far away either in 3rd and 4th respectively. This group though hasn’t got going properly yet as only 5 of the 12 registered competitors have made an appearance.

Championship: 1 Paul Edmonton (40 points), 2 Kerrie Donohue (36), 3 Chloe Haffenden (31), 4 Simon Keyes (16), 5 Laura Elvin (14), 6= Ben Nash, Catherine Round, Jeremy Belbin, Jim Winbourne, Sam Gibbs, Steven King & Stuart Scott (0).

Group 6 (11 registered competitors)
1 David Moore 01:45:47, 2 Ellen Ball 01.56.07.

Just the two runners in Group 6, with David Moore the comprehensive victor as Ellen Ball was unable to produce her usual form.

Championship: 1 Ellen Ball (33 points), 2= Chloe Wilkinson & David Moore (20), 4 Andy Hall (18), 5 Trevor Adams (16), 6= Alison Horn, Callum Biggins, Greg Farrell, Michael Reeves, Paul Whelan & Steven Wynne (0).

Group 7 (8 registered competitors)
1 Kirsty Caulfield 01:41:53, 2 Ed Bossert 01:53:08.

Only two runners in this group as well, with Canterbury winner Kirsty Caulfield well clear of Ed Bossert. Group 7 was well represented at the previous round so hopefully they will be back in force over the upcoming shorter distances.

Championship: 1 Kirsty Caulfield (40 points), 2 Ed Bossert (32), 3 Kevin Ly (18), 4 Jonathan Bond (16), 5 David Welfare (15), 6 Guy Sims (13), 7 Roger King (12), 8 Matt Leggett (0).

Group 8 (9 registered competitors)
1 Ian Bauly 01:47:49, 2 Lianne Evans 01:48:23, 3 Adam Waterman 01:48:25, 4 Mark Burgess 01:56:17.

Ian Bauly repeated his Canterbury victory at Paddock Wood, with Lianne Evans and Adam Waterman close by and separated on chip timing by just two seconds. Mark Burgess was a distant 4th.

Championship: 1 Ian Bauly (40 points), 2 Mark Burgess (30), 3= Tabitha Rogers & Liane Evans (18), 5= Mike Roberts & Adam Waterman (16), 7 Stuart Isaacs (14), 8= Scott Haragan & Seaton Giles (0).

Group 9 (10 registered competitors)
1 Andrew Vadron 01:42:50, 2 Steve Burnett 01:43:31, 3 Agne Zavistanavice 01:50:11, 4 Paul Strachan 01:55:25.

The opening two rounds of this year’s championship have been the longest and in many of the groups both of the events have been won by the same person. Group 9 was no exception with Andrew Vadron leading home Steve Burnett in a repeat of the opening round’s result.  Burnett was using the Garmin pacing function for the first time as recommended by his good friend, Group 11’s Nigel Hewson, who was also using it for the first time and to good effect. Agne Zavistanavice set a PB to take 3rd, with Paul Strachan 4th.

Championship: 1 Andrew Vadron (40 points), 2 Steve Burnett (36), 3 Agne Zavistanavice (30), 4 Lucy Tang (16), 5= Julian Edmonds & Paul Strachan (15), 7 Emma Chapman (13), 8= Adam Jenkins, Anthony Donohue & Edwina Cheng (0).

Group 10 (9 registered competitors)
1 Paul Munday 01:46:47, 2 Millie Haffenden 01:54:09.

A fully focused Paul Munday took his second victory of the series and a PB for the distance, ahead of Millie Haffenden who has been runner-up to Munday at both rounds so far.

Championship: 1 Paul Munday (40 points), 2 Millie Haffenden (36), 3 Rachel Knowles (16), 4 Katie Isaacs (15), 5 Amelia Isaacs (14), 6 Vassilis Sakizlis (13), 7 Rachel King (12), 8= David Groom & Stephen Woodgate (0).

Group 11 (10 registered competitors)
1 Nigel Hewson 01:56:12, 2 Iain Jameson 02:05:26.

Just the two in Group 11 also, with Nigel Hewson and his Garmin heading home Canterbury winner Iain Jameson enjoying his first ever half marathon.

Championship: 1 Iain Jameson (38 points), 2 Nigel Hewson (20), 3 Viral Tanna (18), 4 Wendy Everest (16), 5 Dean Chapman (15), 6= Andrew Cochrane, Ben Clarkson, David Horsfield, Hilary Morton & Steve Munday (0).

Group 12 (11 registered competitors)
1 Pippa Niven 01:55:25, 2 Joe Murray 01:56:48, 3 Maxine Horsfield 02:00:13, 4 Jackie York 02:01:24.

A new PB for Pippa Niven saw her reverse Round 1’s result and take the honours from Canterbury victor Joe Murray. Maxine Horsfield and Jackie York were 3rd and 4th.
